A Compilation of Short Essays on Modern Issues

Environmental Pollution

Pollution is killing the lives of many species. Every day the problem grows on our planet. Humans are the cause of this. In the 21st century, things have gotten worse because we have invented chemical materials that are polluting our planet.

Garbage and destruction of the ozone layer affect the environment, and overpopulation is encroaching upon green areas. The toxic waste from factories that is thrown into rivers and the sea contaminates them, killing the animals and fish that live in those habitats.

The consequences of all this pollution are global warming, melting glaciers, and changes in the climate. Another consequence is the hole in the ozone layer, which lets in ultraviolet rays that reach the skin of human beings and cause diseases.

What could humans do to stop environmental pollution? We must avoid deforestation because trees are the only source of oxygen for the planet. We must avoid contaminating the seas and rivers, which provide us with the water we need to live.

If we are aware that we are facing a big problem and take action, we can solve this problem.

The Role of Exams in Education

Exams have been part of the learning system for a very long time. This way of evaluating students has proven to have advantages and disadvantages.

First, exams force students to study more. In fact, they give students the opportunity to improve. In addition, exams help both teachers and students because both can check their progress in a relatively quick and easy way.

On the other hand, educators, parents, and students are asking how good exams really are. First, many people claim that it is not fair to evaluate a student solely on the result of an examination. Second, not all students can demonstrate their potential in exams. What’s more, some students get nervous, or they may need more time to complete the exam.

To summarize, despite the disadvantages, exams are a common way to evaluate students’ progress.

The Impact of Technology

The development of technology and communications during the last decade of the 20th century has had an important influence on our lives. It has revolutionized the way we work, learn, and communicate. But what has changed our lives the most is definitely the internet. However, there are both advantages and disadvantages.

The main advantage of computing is probably that it gives us access to information quickly and easily. It also helps us to do tasks more efficiently. What is more, technology improves the lives of those who have fewer opportunities and less access to education, and it contributes to the development of poor or isolated regions in the world.

On the other hand, there are disadvantages. People have to learn new skills since the world of work has changed. As a result, people who cannot use computers will not be able to get a job. Besides, we depend so much on computing that if the computer breaks down or there is no electricity, we cannot work at all.

In conclusion, I think the computer is probably the most useful invention of the 20th century, despite having to face some difficulties in adapting to new technologies.

The Advantages and Disadvantages of Mobile Phones

Life was less stressful before telephones existed. In my opinion, life was better before the invention of mobile phones because we had more freedom to talk to our friends at home and at work. Currently, having a mobile phone is unsettling because sometimes we depend too much on them.

There are many advantages to having a mobile phone: when you have to call someone urgently, when an accident occurs, when we need help. But I think there are times we abuse this tool, and sometimes it is very dangerous to our health. The disadvantages are that they can cause many damages to our health. According to some investigations, they may explode in our hands or at a gas station. There have been many accidents that have happened with people around the world.

Finally, we must take into account the importance of mobile phones because they improve our lives, but we must be aware of the dangers they can cause and the effects they can have on our lives.

The Importance of Key Subjects in Education

In my opinion, most subjects that young people study are important because each one gives us new information which could be useful for our future jobs. Nonetheless, I think that there are three subjects which are especially important for all students.

The first is our own language. I firmly believe that it is necessary to know how to express your ideas and communicate correctly. For this reason, nobody should make spelling or grammar mistakes when using their mother tongue.

The second is math. As far as I know, it is the most studied subject in the world, and practically every career uses some math. Moreover, doing math helps our minds to reason and organize complicated situations into clear and logical steps, which is very useful for students who will have to resolve problems or simplify difficulties in their jobs.

Lastly, I consider studying English to be extremely important for career advancement and respect in the business world. Nowadays, in order to work abroad for international companies and communicate with people from other countries, students must have a good level of English.

The Car of the Future

This car will fly and sail in lakes. It will come in many colors: brown, green, black, yellow, white, and red. It will travel up to 600 km/h. It will have leather seats, air conditioning, a small LCD TV, and a computer with GPS. It will have automatic brakes, so it will not crash.

You will have a voice recognition program, so you will start and stop the engine, open and close the doors, and even be taken to your destination with simple voice commands. It will have a capacity for four people and will use water as fuel. This future car will be cheap.

I wonder if I could live long enough to see it.
