Aloma’s Journey: Love, Loss, and Growth in Barcelona

Aloma’s Journey

Life in Barcelona

Aloma, a teenager, lived with her brother John, sister-in-law Anna, and nephew Daniel in a cottage in suburban Barcelona. The suicide of her older brother five years prior deeply affected Aloma, leaving her with unanswered questions about life and loss.

Robert’s Arrival

News arrived of Anna’s brother, Robert, visiting from America. Initially, Aloma disliked Robert, finding him unpleasant. She felt disconcerted by her jealousy when a neighbor showed interest in him. However, Aloma’s feelings shifted, and she began to see Robert in a different light, envisioning a potential future with him. Their connection deepened, culminating in a kiss at the cinema.

Daniel’s Illness and a Summer Romance

Aloma’s nephew, Daniel, fell ill, and a change of environment was recommended. While missing Daniel, Aloma experienced a joyful summer with Robert, their bond strengthening. However, she harbored a suspicion that he might eventually leave her for another woman in America. During the summer, they slept together.

Autumn and Betrayal

With autumn’s arrival, Anna and a still-ailing Daniel returned. John confessed to Aloma that he had gambled away their house and needed money to reclaim it. His only option was retrieving a valuable ring from a former girlfriend. Aloma’s attempt to retrieve the ring resulted in humiliation and the realization that they would have to leave their childhood home. Amidst this turmoil, she met Joaquim, a kind and supportive acquaintance.

New Beginnings and Motherhood

Months later, living in an apartment, Aloma discovered she was pregnant. Choosing not to tell Robert, who had returned to America with his wife, Aloma felt used and betrayed. Determined to raise her child independently, she worked to provide for her son’s future. Returning to her empty childhood home, filled with memories, Aloma wept, marking her transition into adulthood.
