Basketball: Roles, Principles, and Techniques
Basketball: Roles and Functions
Each player has a specific role and function in the game. The different needs of the game delineate the characteristics of the players for a position, function, and role within the court. Since five players are always on the court, we have the following:
1. Point Guard
Also called the “playmaker.” On offense, the point guard brings the ball up the court and initiates the offensive play, directing the team’s strategy. Desirable characteristics include good ball handling, court vision, passing ability, speed, and an accurate outside shot. Point guards are valued for their assists as well as their points, and a good player excels at both. On defense, they must hinder the opposing point guard’s progress, cover passing lanes, and be ready to grab long rebounds. Typically, point guards are not the tallest players; their ability to organize and direct the play is paramount. They should be the most balanced players on the team.
2. Shooting Guard
Usually shorter, faster, and more agile than the rest of the team, except sometimes the point guard. Shooting guards should provide points with a good shot, including three-pointers, possess good ball skills, and have a great ability to drive to the basket. They usually take the inbound passes from the baseline unless the coach designates a special strategy.
3. Small Forward
Generally, an intermediate height between the guards and the forwards. Their game balances strength and shooting. This is an important position due to the need for both height and speed. On offense, they should be good three-point shooters and also able to finish a drive to the basket. They are key players in launching a fast break and are often well-rounded. On defense, they should be alert to help close out on rebounds and pick up mid-range rebounds.
4. Power Forward
This is a more physical role than the small forward, often with a playing style similar to the center. They score most of their points in the low post, although some can become effective outside shooters. They support the center in preventing the opposing team’s inside game and securing rebounds.
5. Center
These are the tallest and most muscular players on the team. Normally, the center uses their height and power to play near the rim. A center who combines strength with agility is a key asset for their team. They are often the most noticeable players to novice fans due to their great height. In Europe, the average center has evolved and is able to shoot from further out. On defense, they aim to grab short rebounds, prevent the opposing team’s inside game, and block the drives of outside players.
