Web beacons help us measure the effectiveness of our website and our advertising in various ways, for example, by counting the number of individuals who visit our website from a particular advertisement or make a purchase from our website after viewing a particular advertisement as well as by telling us when a web page is viewed and providing a description of the page where the web beacon is placed. Web beacons also help us measure the effectiveness of our e-mail campaigns, for example, by counting the number of individuals who open or act upon an e-mail message, determining when an e-mail message is opened and determining how many times an e-mail message is forwarded.

The information we collect may include some limited personal information, and web beacons allow us to recognize users by accessing iolo cookies. We may also combine the information that we collect through web beacons with other personal information we have collected from you. We use all of this information to better tailor our marketing to you and may use this information for other purposes, such as to enable a shopping cart, customize content on our website and undertake internal research.

We may allow third parties to compile individual information or aggregated statistics from our use of web beacons to enable such third parties to determine the effectiveness of online marketing and to allow such third parties to develop statistics on how often clicking on an advertisement results in a purchase or other action on the advertiser’s site. Aggregate information is anonymous and may include demographic and usage information.

You can make some web beacons unusable by rejecting cookies.

The Science Behind System Mechanic: Tune-up Definitions™

What makes System Mechanic the safest and most effective PC performance product on the market?

We’re asked every day by ecstatic customers who have made the switch from another product: “How is System Mechanic able to find more problems, resolve more errors, and keep my PC running so much faster than the other products I’ve tried?”

iolo Labs™

The answer is simple: Aside from having the most robust toolset of any tune-up product, System Mechanic is powered by real science.

In 2001, iolo Labs was founded with one mission: find out why PCs slow down and become unstable over time, and then find out how to reverse this aging process.

The results of this ongoing scientific research have been encapsulated into what iolo calls Tune-up Definitions™. This information fuels System Mechanic with over 30,000 separately defined threats to PC performance and stability that allow it to scan, diagnose, repair, and speed-up your computer with laser precision. Tune-up Definitions™ are now provided as weekly updates to System Mechanic, with over 10,000 new definitions added in the last year alone.

Unlike one-size-fits-all “cleaners” or “utilities” that dangerously attempt to apply a single set of fixes to every PC (sometimes causing more harm than good), System Mechanic is able to intelligently adapt to a limitless variety of configurations, installed software, or special environments. This allows it to create a set of personalized tune-up actions custom-tailored for your specific PC — each time you use it!

As you install new software, upgrade your hardware, or even change to a new operating system, Tune-up Definitions keep System Mechanic informed and ensure it is always able to operate with maximum effectiveness and safety, which is how it produces the amazing results so many of our customers talk about.

Each day, iolo Labs makes new discoveries about computer performance and problem resolution that are used as the foundation for Tune-up Definitions. Now, in System Mechanic, you get these weekly updates free as part of your service plan, so you can rest assured your PC is well taken care of.

iolo Labs studies computer performance trends from hundreds of thousands of

samples each day. This information helps identify emerging threats of PCstability which are then published as Tune-up Definitions updates.

NEW: Guided Recommendations™

A seamless collaboration of 15 years of iolo’s breakthrough analytics, research, and professional experience, Guided Recommendations harnesses the collective intelligence of the entire System Mechanic community base so you can safely and easily take your PC to even greater heights of performance, even beyond what System Mechanic already performs automatically.

Guided Recommendations fuses together three powerful technologies; Tune-up Definitions™, TrueImpact™ and the collective intelligence of the System Mechanic community to provide guidance on removing additional hidden programs that can bottleneck your PC performance.

Because no two PCs are alike, each recommendation is tailored to your specific PC, providing insight into which potentially unwanted programs are typically disabled by the System Mechanic community. These collective recommendations, along with detailed descriptions and the impact measurement of each of these programs, gives you the power and to make at-a-glance decisions about how to make your computer faster and more efficient than ever before possible—all in just a few clicks.

ENHANCED: AcceleWrite™

New real-time technology that optimizes file organization on both solid state drives (SSD) and traditional hard disk drives (HDD).

Working deep inside the Windows operating system, it minimizes the degree that a new file, or changes to existing files, will be stored inefficiently. By minimizing the random writing of data, AcceleWrite increases overall system performance and largely reduces or eliminates the need to perform secondary file optimization (such as disk defragmentation), saving your system time and energy resources and helping prolong the life of your PC.

ENHANCED: Startup Optimizer™

%IMAGE_16%

Start Windows significantly faster by eliminating unneeded or hazardous start up programs safely. Startup Optimizer is now expanded and even more simplified and delivers extra system horsepower at your command. Technology refinements now make it easier to achieve accelerated system startup speeds while precious resources are injected back into active programs and tasks throughout the day.

New advancements in System Mechanic 11.5 coupled with ongoing research from iolo Labs and the collective intelligence of the entire System Mechanic community result in even broader startup coverage. Now it’s easier than ever to identify and root out unwanted programs that silently leach horsepower from startup and other high priority activities.

NEW: Windows 8 Certified

NEW: Windows 8 Certified

Every new operating system presents its own optimization challenges and Windows 8 is no exception. Version 11.5 has been specifically engineered to expand on the performance improvements in Windows 8 while at the same time eliminating issues it shares with earlier Windows operating systems.

It has been fully designed to effectively fix, optimize and maintain Windows 8 PCs based on extensive testing from iolo Labs.

ENHANCED: Patented ActiveCare® Technology
(US Pat 7,873,877)

One of the many industry-first innovations included in System Mechanic, ActiveCare is now easier than ever to configure, with setup profiles that allow you to apply one-click maintenance options to your entire PC without the guesswork. System Mechanic’s exclusive idle-time optimization kicks in when your PC isn’t being used and releases full control when you return — so your system always stays ready for action. By silently tuning, fixing, and cleaning as needed while you’re away, you’ll have a faster and healthier PC without experiencing foreground maintenance activities that can bog things down.

Other products blindly schedule maintenance at specific intervals whether they’re needed or not, and ignore operation-jamming problems that arise between scheduled events. Patented ActiveCare transparently and intelligently keeps your PC running optimally so your system always runs at peak performance levels.

Designated Drivers™

Keeps your PC running swiftly and stably by automatically installing critical driver updates.

Device drivers are files filled with critical information that instruct your computer and the devices connected to it how to operate together effectively. All of the hardware on a PC—from the keyboard and mouse to the CPU and Wi-Fi adapter—require an up-to-date driver to keep them in good working order.

Because they perform such essential tasks, keeping your drivers updated and in good working condition is central to ensuring your PC’s overall stability and performance. However, the process of manually updating drivers can be frustrating and time-consuming.

Designated Drivers™–lets you update all of your PC’s drivers with just one click, now making driver updates a painless process. Designated Drivers is the only tool of its kind to exclusively use Microsoft-approved driver updates, which have gone through two rounds of quality assurance testing to ensure the updates are safe, reliable, and broadly compatible.

SSD Accelerator™

Streamlines, optimizes, and prolongs the life of modern solid-state drives, keeping them running at peak performance.

Although solid state drives (SSDs) enjoy a significant speed advantage over traditional hard disk drives, it doesn’t mean they are impervious to slowdown or degradation over time. With regular, everyday use, many users have found that these drives begin to suffer from incremental performance loss.

To resolve this problem, iolo’s engineers designed SSD Accelerator™ to proactively optimize solid state drives to keep them running at the peak of speed and efficiency. SSD Accelerator has also been designed to work together with System Mechanic’s other drive optimization tools such as AcceleWrite and ActiveCare technology in order to ensure that all of your data storage drives are automatically optimized for maximum performance and longevity on a regular basis.

ENHANCED: Program Accelerator™

Speeds up overall program responsiveness by re-aligning all of a program’s dependent files on the hard drive.

The problem: program misalignment can be a major cause of system slowdown created by errant Windows and software updates. It leads to progressively slower program launch and responsiveness as dependent files become scattered all over the hard drive.

Disk defragmenters can make it worse, blindly compacting and separating related files even more.

Program Accelerator’s unique patent-pending technology adds sophistication to enhance defrag tools, such as DriveAccelerator™, and move related files back together.

Bottom line: Program Accelerator jump-starts your sluggish programs by fully re-aligning your whole PC file system.

Smarter Boot-Time Tune-ups

Some of the most important Windows system files such as the page file, the Registry hives, and the master file table, are locked by Windows and can never be defragmented using conventional defragmenting tools, but System Mechanic’s Boot-Time Defragmentation can defragment these special files conveniently before Windows loads.

Now, all of System Mechanic’s boot-time operations come with a series of prompts and options that offer you increased control in order to avoid inopportune delays while starting up the PC. You can set up black-out times during the day where no boot-time tasks will be performed, and new prompts at PC startup give you the ability to run or postpone boot-time tasks at that time.

Plus, hundreds of overall universal improvements for dramatically improved speed

A multitude of improvements, enhancements, stability augmentations and general fixes have been incorporated into version 11.5 for the most effective and reliable performance optimization product to date.

Optimize Windows Startup

Review Potentially Unwanted Startup Programs

Overview of Optimize Windows Startup wizard

This screen displays a list of potentially unwanted startup programs, and then you decide which items to turn off or keep on.

Step 1: View information

Classifications and details are displayed for all potentially unwanted startup programs.

Classifications

Startup programs are classified as follows:

  • Dangerous – Known security risks that hinder the normal operation of your PC. These files typically account for viruses or any other processes which may cause harm. Turning off dangerous items is highly recommended.

  • Unnecessary – Not essential to the normal operation of your PC. These files are typically running to provide quick access to various programs but may inadvertently clutter and slow your system. Disabling unnecessary items is recommended.

  • User Choice (potentially unwanted) – May or may not be essential to the normal operation of your PC, depending on your needs. These files are typically running as part of programs or tasks initiated with or without your explicit approval. Disabling User Choice items is personal preference.

Program Details

The following details are displayed for each startup program:

  • Name – The name of the program.

  • Publisher – The creator or distributor of the program.

  • Location – Directory location of the program (displays when View>Display extended program details is selected).

  • Startup Type – Categorization of the startup program (displays when View>Display extended program details is selected).

  • iolo Labs research – Additional information gathered by iolo Labs researchers about the program.

  • Measured performance impact – A status representing how much the program is affecting the PC’s performance at startup. Possible statuses range from No tangible impact to Potential full system freeze.

  • User community results – The tendency of other System Mechanic users to keep the program on or turn it off. (More on user community results)

Filtering results

There are two methods of filtering results:

View

Clicking the View button will display a drop-down menu with the following options:

  • Show User choice programs – Makes programs classified as User Choice visible.

  • Show programs previously turned off – Makes programs that have previously been turned off visible.

  • Show programs previously kept on – Makes programs that have previously been kept on visible

  • Display extended program details – Displays Location and Startup Type details for all programs.

  • Expand all program descriptions – Makes the complete iolo Labs research text visible for all programs.

  • Collapse all program descriptions – Returns iolo Labs research text to a minimized view.

Sort

Clicking the Sort button will display a drop-down menu with the following options:

  • Sort by current status – Sorts results by status within their classification groups. The statuses are, default (no action taken), Turned off, Will be kept on, and To be decided later.

  • Sort by performance impact – Sorts results by measured performance impact from highest to lowest.

  • Sort by program name – Sorts results alphabetically within their classification groups.

  • Sort by iolo Labs classification – Sorts results by iolo Labs program classification, from most dangerous to least.

Step 2: Manage startup programs

For each startup program, either keep it on, turn it off, or decide later by clicking one of the corresponding action buttons.

  • Keep it on – The program will not be disabled and will no longer appear in scans as a potentially unwanted startup item. To undo this action click Undo.

  • Turn it off – The item will be disabled and will no longer start when Windows boots. To undo this action click Turn it back on.

  • Decide later – The item will not be disabled, but will continue to appear in scans as potentially unwanted. To undo this action click Cancel.

Turning startup programs back on

To turn a previously disabled startup program back on,

  1. Click View, then ensure that the Show programs previously turned off option is selected.

  2. Locate the program you wish to turn back on and click Turn it back on.

Step 3: Close

When you are finished, click Exit on the bottom of the screen to close the wizard.
