Bone Structure

Epiphysis

The epiphyses are the proximal and distal ends of the bone. They are usually wide or bulky, forming the joint between the bones and providing a surface for muscular insertions. They are made of spongy bone.

Diaphysis

The diaphysis is the shaft or main body of the bone. This consists of compact bone tissue, which surrounds the medullary cavity. Inside the medullary cavity is the bone marrow. This cavity is surrounded by a fibrous membrane called the endosteum.

Metaphysis

The metaphysis is the buffer zone between the epiphysis and the diaphysis. It consists of spongy bone tissue which produces the longitudinal growth of bones, due to the proliferation of cartilage. When the cartilage stops multiplying, bone growth ends.

Short Bones

Short bones have a cuboid shape. They are formed by compact bone covered by periosteum except in the joints.

Flat Bones

Flat bones tend to be thin and have a curved appearance. They are formed by porous bone tissue and bone marrow in their interior (skull and ribs).

Spine

The spine supports and protects the spinal cord. It is made up of short bones.
