Child Language and Cognitive Development: Strategies

Articulate Language Development in Children

Language is the use of words, which allows us to express ideas. This is called articulate language and is mainly made up of sound systems capable of combining with each other.

Intellectual expression and communication are the specific functions of articulate speech. The evolution of articulate speech depends on the maturational development of the child and the stimulation and motivation of their environment.

The child should develop phonic awareness, that is, they should enhance the ability to discriminate and make sounds through:

  • Games
  • Invention of words
  • Pebbles
  • Repetition of syllables
  • Rhyme
  • Repetition of sounds

Articulated language is classified as: sound system, vocabulary, and syntax or semantics.

Phonological System

The phonological system is the ability to articulate with precision the different phonemes of language, especially when the child has a developmental delay.

Basic Articulatory Exercises

  • For the lips
  • For the cheeks
  • To speed up the tongue
  • To blow

Vocabulary and Semantics

Vocabulary and semantics refer to the number of words that the child has mastered and the meaning given to each, between 5-6 years. The basis of this development is in speaking and listening skills.

  • Bookstore or symbolic
  • Experiences planned
  • Show and Tell

Syntax

Syntax is the system and structure of language, so it should work specifically on the combination and arrangement of the words in certain patterns and sequences. Thus the child becomes aware that one must speak in a structured way.

Through oral games, one can work on awareness of the subject, verb, and complement, which are essential for the development of syntax.

  • Oral questioning Games
  • Order Print
  • Describe Print
  • Complete sentences

Developing Thinking Skills in Children

Thinking is the ability of the child to create, combine, and compare ideas and then express them through language.

To develop a plan, thought should be worked on cognitive development in children to facilitate the learning of mathematics.

Besides guiding the senses and promoting their actions on objects, so that would guide and organize them.

For the development of thinking, we will work on:

Verbal Expression of a Logical Proposition

Disclaimer

Disclaimer: The intention is that the child uses more than one form of denial in their expressions.

Activity: “It is true that Joseph is your brother” (the child must say, “Joseph is not my brother”).

Conjunction

Conjunction: It looks for 2 properties or relations in the expressions made by the child.

Activity: “Carlos is a cousin of Mary and is older than Mary.”

Disjunction

Disjunction: It implies that at least one of the alternatives exists.

Activity: “They gave me permission to go to the circus or the movies.”

Symbolic Expression of a Logical View

This refers to the logic of symbols and images used by the child, that is, activities in which the symbol or the image will replace the words.

The Concept of Conservation, Seriation, and Class

Symbolic Function

It involves differentiating signifier and signified, which also interfere with gestures (imitation), drawing (graphics), games, language, and mental image.
