Crafting Engaging Emails, Letters, and Reviews: Tips and Examples
Informal Email/Letter Writing
Informal Email/Letter: Use a direct and personal tone, incorporating phrases like “I think” and “You should.” Employ informal vocabulary such as “totally” and “lots of stuff,” including phrasal verbs like “go on” instead of “continue.” Use contractions/short forms, for example, “I‘ve just heard you‘ve been to…”
Incorporate informal linking words like “Plus,” “Also,” “Well,” “Anyway,” “To sum up,” and “In a nutshell.” Feel free to use idioms such as “Call it a day,” “Break a leg,” and “It’s not rocket science.” Abbreviations like “ASAP,” “TV,” “photo,” “cell,” and “net” are acceptable.
- Salutation: Dear…, Hi Tom
- Opening Paragraph: Many thanks for your (recent/last) letter. It was good/nice/great to hear from you again…
- Main Content Paragraphs: Provide further details or the information requested.
- Paragraph 1: First of all, you absolutely need to…
- Paragraph 2: Secondly, I would advise you to…
- Paragraph 3: On your free weekend, you should…
- Within a paragraph: Also, don’t forget to…
- Closing and Signing Off: Give a reason for ending the letter (e.g., “Anyway, I must go and get on with my work.” or “I guess it’s time I got on with that studying I’ve been avoiding.”) Finish on a positive note (e.g., “We must try and meet up soon…”) and mention future contact. Sign off with your name (e.g., “Take care,” “Best wishes,” -Your Name-).
Review: The Fitness Challenge Series
“The Fitness Challenge” series was a pleasant surprise. I loved it! Initially, I was wary when my editor asked me to review this fitness reality program. It would mean staying in and watching the program every week, which seemed like a potential waste of time.
However, I soon changed my mind. After watching the first episode, I was completely addicted. I’m not particularly into fitness, but the contestants’ passion and motivation struck me. They pushed themselves through grueling workouts, running on machines, lifting weights, and swimming lengths of the pool, all to get their hands on the winner’s trophy. Their enthusiasm made you want to buy some trainers and get down to the gym.
As the first series, it had its flaws. It was occasionally slow, and there wasn’t always enough focus on the fitness aspect. Some contestants who made it to later rounds seemed a bit dull compared to those eliminated earlier. Thankfully, the final two competitors were inspiring and captivating. They must have motivated thousands of viewers to consider going to the gym. The viewing figures skyrocketed, and I’m thrilled there will be a second series.
Despite the minor issues, I can’t wait for it to start again!
Hotel Review: Paradise on Earth, Bahamas
A Luxurious Bahamas Getaway with Minor Drawbacks
Have you ever stayed at a resort in an expensive hotel? My friend and I recently had the chance to experience such a luxurious vacation at Paradise on Earth in the Bahamas.
Upon arrival, we were amazed by the hotel’s modern design. The rooftop pool offered a breathtaking view. As we walked towards the hotel, we even spotted Brad Pitt, who was staying at the same resort! We were excited to see our room, but our excitement turned to disappointment when we found it uncleaned. We immediately contacted the hotel CEO, who was polite and apologetic. We were offered a larger room as compensation.
Later, we went for dinner and were presented with a menu. The menu had limited options, and the food itself wasn’t very tasty. For instance, the steak and potatoes I ordered were both raw and small. Despite the dining disappointment, my friend and I enjoyed a beautiful sunset view, which was the highlight of our trip.
Honestly, apart from those two problems, the vacation was excellent. I would suggest that the hotel ensure all rooms are clean and that the food is properly cooked. Overall, I would recommend staying at this hotel.
