Describing People, Journeys, and Letters: Examples & Tips
Describing a Person
Dear Cesar,
I hope you are well. I have just received an email from your friend Pedro; he wants to buy my car. Could you tell me a bit about him?
Send my regards to your family, and I hope to hear from you soon.
Best wishes,
I can tell you about Pedro. He is 31 and is studying History with me. I think he’s quite extroverted and very sociable; he has a lot of friends and is very good to them. He has a younger brother and many cousins. He is hard-working and responsible. He likes going out, seeing films and TV series, listening to music, and playing sports like tennis or basketball. He is very independent. He lives with his parents, and his brother lives and works in Madrid. He is a bit untidy. He speaks Italian and English a bit.
A Journey: Turkey
I remember two years ago when my girlfriend and I visited Turkey. It was amazing! The best trip I’ve ever been on. The country is great, the people are so nice, and the weather is wonderful. You cannot help falling in love with Turkey. So, I will try to tell you about my trip.
Our trip started with visits to two museums in Ankara: the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations and the Ataturk Memorial. That was kind of cool, as I got to learn a little about Turkey and how it became what it is today. I was especially impressed by how much the Turks love their founder. Turks still have this cult of personality. The face of Mustafa Kemal is everywhere: on the coins and banknotes, on the walls in shops and banks. His statues are scattered all over Ankara, and even on a rainy day, you can see quite a few people of all ages wandering around his Memorial. It is a pleasure to see a nation so proud of its history.
An Informal Letter: Saint John’s Eve
Dear Laura,
How are you? I’m writing this letter to tell you about Saint John’s Eve because I would like to invite you to spend this party with me and my friends.
Saint John’s Eve is a summer solstice festival, which is celebrated on the longest day of the year: June 23rd. The celebration starts at sunset. It is a very special, important, and traditional festival in my country. There are a lot of fireworks and bonfires everywhere. Everybody is dancing, jumping, and singing songs around the bonfires. We eat typical Saint John’s food like “coca” (a pie or cake with sugar and fruits). This celebration represents purification and rejuvenation. We celebrate it all night because it is the shortest night of the year. We really enjoy it!
I would like you to come because you and I haven’t met since last year. You have some weeks to think about it, and you are just one hour away by plane!
Please call me soon!
Regards,
Your friend,
Letter to Alex and Pamela
Dear Alex and Pamela,
How are you? I miss you very much. I’m writing this letter to tell you about my last holidays.
I was on holiday in India with my family. We were there for two weeks, and we had a very good time. We went to the Taj Mahal in Agra. It is a very beautiful place; there are a lot of foreign visitors who spend their holidays there. We went to my cousin’s wedding. We went to New Delhi to join another cousin’s party (at night). We were dancing for a very long time, and there were a lot of different kinds of food, all of them were really delicious. Later, we went to the hotel really exhausted from all that dancing.
The worst part of this trip was when we went by bus because this trip lasted eight hours. But it was worth it because it was the funniest trip of my life.
I’m looking forward to hearing from you.
