Electrical Line Clearance: Safety Distances & Grounding

Post Neutral Grounding

The neutral conductor of airline distribution networks of utilities will be connected to ground at the processing center or power generating plant. Also, in the distribution patterns TT and TN type, driver neutral and protection scheme for TN-S, must be grounded elsewhere, and at least once every 500 meters of line length.

General Conditions for Crossing Lines

1.2 Crossing Other AC Electrical Lines

When bare conductor lines are established on different supports, the distance between the nearest conductors of the two lines will be above 0.50 meters. If the crossing is done on a common support, this distance will be as indicated in section 3.2.2 for support referral.

1.4 Crossing Roads and Non-Electrified Railways

Drivers will have a breaking load of not less than 410 daN. In the case of insulated conductors, this value may be reduced to 280 daN.

1.5 Crossing Electrified Railways, Trams, and Trolleybuses

The minimum height for drivers on cables or wires or conductors sustaining the contact line is 2 meters.

1.6 Crossing Teleferics and Cableways

When the low voltage line passes over, the minimum distance between the conductors and any element of the cable car installation is 2 meters. When the low voltage overhead line passes below, the distance must not be less than 3 meters.

1.7 Crossing Rivers or Floatable Waterways and Canals

The height of the conductors above the surface for the maximum water level that can be achieved will be From G + H = 1 m, where G is the gauge. In the event that there is no definite gauge, it is considered equal to 6 meters.

1.8 Crossing Radio and Television Receiving Antennas

Bare drivers of low voltage lines must maintain at least a distance of 1 m with respect to the antenna itself.

1.9 Crossing Water and Gas Pipelines

The minimum distance between power lines and water or gas pipes is 0.20 m. Avoid crossing the vertical joints of the water or gas analyzers or electric pipe joints, placing both at a distance greater than 1 m from the crossing. For bare airlines, the minimum distance is 1 m.

2 Near Parallel Lines

2.1 Parallel High Voltage AC Electrical Lines

To prevent the construction of parallel lines with high voltage at distances less than 1.5 times the height of the highest support among the traces of the closest drivers.

2.2 Parallel AC Electrical and Telecommunication Lines

When both lines are of insulated conductors, the minimum distance is 0.10 m. When any line is of bare conductors, the minimum distance is 1 m. If both lines are on the same support, the minimum distance may be reduced to 0.50 m.

2.3 Parallel Roads

The minimum distance is 6 m when flying with them in areas or spaces of possible road traffic, and 5 m in other cases.

2.4 Parallel Electrified Railways, Trams, and Trolleybuses

The horizontal distance to the conductors of the contact line installation is 1.5 m at least.

2.6 Parallel Water Pipes

The minimum distance between power lines and water pipes will be 0.20 m.

2.7 Parallel Gas Pipelines

The minimum distance between power lines and gas pipes will be 0.20 m, except for high-pressure gas pipelines (over 4 bar), where the distance is 0.40 m. The minimum distance between the joints of electrical wires or cables between the bare wires and the boards of the gas analyzers is 1 m. It will seek to maintain a minimum distance of 0.20 m in horizontal projection. Moreover, the major arteries of gas shall be arranged so as to ensure distances exceeding 1 m on the low voltage power cables.
