Interaction:

Spoken Interaction

  • 1st & 2nd Grade: Can interact simply with previously studied structures with the teacher. Understands basic questions and instructions. Can greet and say goodbye. Answers questions with short phrases about themselves.
  • 3rd & 4th Grade: Can interact simply with previously studied structures with the teacher. Understands basic questions and instructions. Uses practiced English phrases. Can interact in games. Gives basic information about themselves. Can ask for things.
  • 5th & 6th Grade: Can interact simply with previously studied structures with the teacher. Understands basic questions and instructions. Uses practiced English phrases. Can interact in games. Gives basic information about themselves or others. Can ask for things. Can express likes and dislikes.

Written Interaction

  • 3rd & 4th Grade: Writes short, simple postcards. Completes basic registration forms.
  • 5th & 6th Grade: Writes short, simple postcards and letters. Writes numbers, dates, nationality, address, age, etc., on registration forms. Asks for attention. Indicates understanding. Says “Repeat, please.” Says “Sorry, I don’t understand.” Asks for clarification of words or sentences.

Production:

Speaking

  • 1st & 2nd Grade: Produces simple sentences about themselves or a place (1+ words). Reads some words and sentences. Reproduces English sounds and rhythms in songs.

  • 5th & 6th Grade: Produces simple sentences about themselves or a place (3+ words). Speaks about themselves using short phrases. Acts out small, practiced dialogues. Reproduces English sounds and rhythms in songs. Can read or learn a short presentation about a familiar subject.

Writing

  • 1st & 2nd Grade: Traces words. Writes words using visual aids. Writes simple phrases about themselves or following a model.
  • 3rd & 4th Grade: Writes words. Writes phrases about themselves or following a model. Writes phrases using visual aids.
  • 5th & 6th Grade: Writes words. Writes phrases about themselves or following a model. Writes a paragraph under teacher guidance, following a given model. Links phrases with simple connectors like “and” and “but”.

Production Strategies/Planning

Can rehearse what will be said. Can silently plan what will be written.

Compensating

Can point to identify what they mean. Can use gestures to clarify. Can use a general word (hyperonym) and explain its meaning with gestures. Can paraphrase.
