The Therapeutic Power of Aromatic Plant Essences

Aromatherapy is used to treat ailments with highly concentrated oils extracted from plants. These extracts, called essential oils, contain the essences or perfume substances that give plants their characteristic odor.

Essential oils are produced from tiny glands present in the petals, stem, bark, and wood of many plants and trees. In nature, these glands release aromas progressively from the plants. When crushed or heated, they explode and release the odors with much greater potency.

To extract pure essential oils, a steam distillation process is used. If an essence is dissolved in alcohol or another solvent, it is designated as an absolute. Absolutes are less pure than essential oils but still retain interesting healing properties.

The uses of essential oils are multiple, but they are most commonly used in skin anointing (massage). They can also be placed in an inhaler, bathwater, or compress. They are rarely eaten. They are certainly more efficacious when inhaled, as they provoke an immediate action in the brain.

The dosages described in the formulations are the most common and may vary according to each patient’s condition.

Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis)

Rosemary has long been considered a sacred plant. It grows naturally in Mediterranean countries. It is used in cooking and as a medicinal herb. The oil is refreshing, stimulating, and indicated for memory, concentration, and to relieve muscle aches and headaches. It is also excellent as a scalp tonic and for hair problems and dandruff.
