Vocabulary Unit 3

  • Make a living – Earn enough money to buy the things you need / Guanyar-se la vida
  • Get paid peanuts (INFORMAL) – Pay a very small sum of money, nearly nothing / Guanyar una misèria
  • Get sacked (INFORMAL) – Get fired / You lose your job/ You are dismissed / Fer fora de la feina
  • Suburbs (false friend) – A district lying immediately outside a city or town, especially a smaller residential community. / Barri residencial
  • Home-made – Made at home and not bought from a shop / Casolà
  • Pick up – Collect / Recollir
  • Deliver – Bring and hand over (a letter, parcel, or goods) to the proper recipient or address / Repartir
  • Success – Achievement of the results wanted or hoped / Èxit
  • Illiterate – Unable to read and write / Analfabet
  • Lid – A removable cover for closing the opening, usually at the top, of a pot, jar, trunk, etc./ Tapa
  • Blistering heat – Extremely hot / Abrasador, que crema
  • Hub – A center of activity: focal point / Centre, nucli
  • Homesick – Unhappy because of being away from home / Enyorat
