Global Climate Zones: Equatorial, Tropical, Desert, and Temperate

Global Climate Zones

Hot Climates:

Equatorial Climate

  • Location: Areas around the Equator (Amazon Basin, Congo Basin in Africa).
  • Climate Characteristics:
    • Temperatures: Consistently high (approximately 25°C) year-round.
    • Precipitation: Very abundant (approximately 2000mm).
    • Vegetation: Lush and abundant, known as “jungle” in Asia.
    • Rivers and Water: Abundant and regular flow due to high rainfall (e.g., the Amazon).
    • Population and Lifestyles: Home to indigenous populations engaged in rudimentary agriculture.

Tropical Climate

  • Location: North and south of the equatorial climate (e.g., areas of Central and South America, Central Africa, and South Asia).
  • Climate Characteristics:
    • Temperatures: High throughout the year, similar to equatorial climates, but with two distinct seasons: wet (summer) and dry (winter).
    • Vegetation: Tropical forests, savanna (grasses, shrubs, and low trees), and steppe (thorny bushes).
    • Rivers and Water: Flow varies with precipitation; rivers may have little water in the dry season, leading to flooding during the wet season.
    • Population and Lifestyles: Some groups, like the Maasai, are pastoralists practicing livestock grazing.

Desert Climate

  • Location: Around the tropics and inland areas away from the sea (e.g., Sahara and Kalahari in Africa, Gobi in Asia).
  • Climate Characteristics:
    • Temperatures: Very high throughout the year with strong daily thermal oscillation.
    • Rainfall: Scarce, less than 250mm per year.
    • Vegetation: Sparse, with plants like cacti, except in oases (where water and vegetation are available).
    • Rivers and Water: Few watercourses, except for wadis (streams that remain dry most of the year).
    • Population and Lifestyles: Sparsely populated, except for nomadic pastoralists who move with their livestock in search of oases.

Temperate Climates:

Oceanic Climate

  • Location: Between the 40th and 60th parallels, both north and south of the Equator (e.g., west coast of Europe and America in the Northern Hemisphere, south coast of Chile and Argentina in the Southern Hemisphere).
  • Climate Characteristics:
    • Temperatures: Moderate.
    • Precipitation: Abundant and regular throughout the year.
    • Vegetation: Deciduous forests (oaks, chestnuts) and sometimes thorny bushes known as “Landa” or “grassland”.
    • Population and Lifestyles: Densely populated areas in Europe, but sparsely populated in some areas of the Americas.

Mediterranean Climate

  • Location: Primarily around the Mediterranean Sea, but also in California, Chile, South Africa, and southern Australia.
  • Climate Characteristics:
    • Temperatures: Hot summers and mild winters, moderated by the sea.
    • Precipitation: Mostly in autumn and spring, sometimes torrential.
    • Vegetation: Evergreen trees (pine, oak), with abundant bushes such as “Garrigue”.
    • Population and Lifestyles: Farmers grow dryland crops (cereals, olives), with some irrigation and greenhouses.

Continental Climate

  • Location: Remote inland areas (e.g., lower lands of Europe, Asia, and North America).
  • Climate Characteristics:
    • Temperatures: Extreme, with very hot summers and very cold winters.
    • Precipitation: Low and concentrated in summer.
    • Vegetation: Coniferous forests or taiga (pine, fir) in the north, and meadow steppe in the south.
    • Population and Lifestyles: Use of taiga trees for cellulose production (paper) and steppe zones for livestock development.
