Glossary of Terms: Definitions and Meanings
General Definitions
Dung: A place where manure is collected and stored. Typically a very dirty and smelly site.
Pulley: Supplies needed to perform certain tasks or activities (e.g., fishing gear, horse tack).
Croak: The characteristic voice or sound emitted by some birds.
Laborers: People who work in exchange for a wage or daily payment.
Grimace: A variety of dishes, similar to a cooking style. Often refers to regular daily food.
Colossal: Something large or giant; extraordinary or magnificent.
Flashes: Bright, clear discharges of light emitted by the sun or another luminous body. Also, the shine of some objects.
Cease: To stop or come to an end. To cease holding an office or employment.
Moaning: Expressing grief and sorrow with sounds and a plaintive voice. Some animals howl.
He comforted: To comfort, restore strength, energy, or courage.
Polish: The operation of smoothing or giving smoothness and shine to a surface.
Polished: Said of surfaces or objects that are neat and dainty.
Lean: A person or thing that is thin, very thin, and narrow.
Browns: Reddish-brown; dark.
Candid: Simple, naive, without malice or duplicity. White, like the color of snow or milk.
Thoroughness: Care and attention given to even the smallest details when doing something.
Confused: Muddled, tangled; embarrassing or difficult to resolve.
Lucid: Distinguished, brilliant; possessing grace, elegance, and splendor.
Lancet: A tool with a steel blade sharpened on both sides and a very sharp edge, used to open fissures in veins, tumors, etc.
Accurate: Said of those skilled in shooting; wise. Successful, according to what is reasonable or correct.
Stunned: Giddy, thoughtless.
Dullness: Weakness or frailty.
Menudo: Small, little, or thin. Negligible, of low or no importance.
Flannel: Tissue or cotton wool, slightly carded on one or both sides.
Crude: Unrefined, rude, without delicacy.
Actions and States
Cuddle: To shrink from the cold or for other reasons.
Litany: A collective and public prayer to God, the Virgin, and the saints, formed by a series of ordered invocations. A list, string, or enumeration of many names, phrases, or sentences in a row.
Paternalism: The tendency to apply forms of authority and protection, typical of a father in a traditional family, to other social relations (political, labor, economic, etc.).
Scholar: One who possesses strong and deep knowledge in one or multiple disciplines.
Abocado: Exposed, in jeopardy. Said of wine that is neither dry nor sweet.
Sinuous: Forming curves, waves, or bends. Said of character or actions that try to hide the intended purpose.
Places and Geography
Rocky: A location abundant in rocks.
Summits: The highest points of high ground. The culmination or splendor of something.
Collado: A pass or mild depression where one can easily cross from one side of a mountain or mountain range to the other. A hill or mound of earth smaller than a mountain.
Meanders: The curves that describe the course of a river.
Nestling: Shrugging from the cold or for other reasons.
Whitewash: Said of a wall whitened with whitewash, gypsum, or white clay.
Flank: Each of the two sides of a body seen or viewed from the front. The side of a ship or an army.
People and Time
Cossacks: A nomadic people who, in the late fifteenth century, established themselves in several southern districts of Russia. An infantry or cavalry soldier in the Russian army.
Imminent: About to happen, especially in the context of risk.
Old: In the past tense.
Future: An event or future tense. The development or future situation in the life of something or someone.
Objects and Qualities
Cuba: A wooden container used to hold liquids.
Daily: Occurring every day; frequent, habitual.
Ornaments: Decorations. The set of moral qualities of a person.
