Gulliver’s Travels, Pre-Raphaelites, and Blake: Key Themes
Gulliver’s Travels: Frontispiece
Which are the main elements appearing on it? The horses, a giant (Gulliver), the island, etc. Most of those frontispieces depict the arrival of Gulliver to Liliput. Mervyn Peake: Important illustrator. The implication is that the economy of Ireland depends on the existence of England. Everything in Gulliver’s Travels is understood from a political point of view.
Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood
It was founded in 1848 by Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828-1882), John Millais, and Holman Hunt.
Principles:
- To have genuine ideas to express.
- To study Nature attentively, so as to know/learn how to express them. They never imagine the painting; they always use a model.
- To produce good paintings.
The pictures have a medieval taste, like Botticelli’s (before Raphael). Medieval treatment with watercolors. Some pictures of Rossetti have a contrast between reality.
Rossetti’s Paintings
The Blue Closet
In all the paintings of Rossetti, there is a connection between literature and his paintings. The Tune of the Seven Towers is inspired by a poem of Morris. Saint George and the Princess Sabra: Rossetti depicts Morris as Saint George. Another painting: Princess Sabra being sent to the dragon by Edward Burne-Jones. The girl is going to be thrown into the dragon’s hands. The motif of the dragon is also reflected on the soldier’s helmet. Es bastante Boticceliano.
Before the Battle
This pre-Raphaelite art is post-romantic.
This painting is taken from the book of Marloy. Esta pintado a acuarela. Es realmente complicado pintar con acuarela ya que transparenta es no se puedo corregir.
The Bible: “The Childhood of the Virgin Mary”
Una de las preocupaciones de Rosseti es Reality vs. Act: El lirio esta dos veces, en la naturaleza y en el bordado. You are increasing the effect of this showing something which is not this indeed.
