Handball Rules and Gameplay

Gameplay

Duration

Handball is played in two 30-minute halves with a 10-minute break. In case of a tie, and when the competition rules require a winner, a 5-minute overtime period is played.

Players

A team consists of 12 players, with only 7 on the court at a time. Coaches can make substitutions as needed.

Ball

The ball is spherical, covered in leather or synthetic material. Weight and size vary by category.

Scoring

A goal is scored when the ball completely crosses the goal line.

Start of Play

The game begins with a throw-off. After the referee’s whistle, the team has 3 seconds to put the ball in play. All players must be in their respective halves.

Ground Rules

Rules for the Ball Handler

  • Steps: A player can take a maximum of three steps with the ball.
  • Dribbling: Players can dribble the ball.
  • Double Dribble: After stopping dribbling, a player cannot dribble again. They can take three more steps.
  • 5-Second Rule: A player must pass, shoot, or dribble within 5 seconds of catching the ball.
  • Throwing: Players must not step over the sideline when throwing the ball.
  • Body Contact: The ball can be played with the body from the knee upwards. The goalkeeper can use any body part.

Rules for All Players

  • Fouls: Pushing, grabbing, or striking an opponent is not allowed.
  • Blocking: Players can block opponents with their torso, but not with their arms or legs.
  • Goal Area: Players must not enter the 6-meter goal area unless they jump into it without touching the line before releasing the ball.
  • Goalkeeper Privileges: Inside the goal area, the goalkeeper is not penalized for stepping, double dribbling, or holding the ball for more than 3 seconds.
  • Goalkeeper Throws: If the goalkeeper sends the ball over the end line, they put it back into play. If a defending field player touches it, a corner throw is awarded.
  • Penalty Throws: Penalties are taken from where the foul occurred, unless it was between the 6 and 9-meter lines. In that case, the throw is taken from the 9-meter line.
  • 7-Meter Throw: If a player prevents a clear scoring opportunity, a 7-meter throw is awarded. All players must stay behind the 9-meter line.
  • Passive Play: If a team delays play excessively, the referees can call passive play.
  • 2-Minute Suspension: A player can be suspended for 2 minutes. A third suspension results in expulsion, with a substitute allowed after 2 minutes.
