Heraldry: Understanding Shield Partitions and Divisions

Partitions

1. Concept

Partitions are the divisions that are made from the Campo del Escudo, resulting from the same few parts that may be similar or proportional, in some cases, irregular and unequal in others. Each of the resulting parts has its own forms and is emblematic in Heraldry.

2. The Partition Can Be Regular or Irregular

2.1 Regular Partitions

They are named by the forms that result from the division of the Campo del Escudo by one or more straight lines. They give rise to:

  • EC-divided into “simple forms”: Shield Field split with a single straight line. E.g., Split, cut, chopped, broken.
  • CE divided into “composite shapes”: Shield Field split with two straight boundaries. E.g., Quartered in saltire or cross, Girona.
  • CE divided into “forms thirds”: Two boundary lines that divide straight and parallel to it in “three proportional sectors”. E.g., Plywood in Palo, Strip, Band, Bar.

2.2 Irregular Partitions

They result in:

  • Formed by straight lines: Trainer, Footwear, Cape, Contraembrazado, Curtains, Braced, Embedded, Set, Flanked, Flanquisado, Arrow, Chief tablecloths and M. pointed, Damaged, Clothing, Zig-Zag.
  • Formed by curved lines: Entada/Entado in chief, Ent head and elevation, Tickets for Tip and tip E.en and fallen, Flanked, Jiron Rounded, tablecloths curved plywood bracing, Contraembrazado Terc, Terc in breast, Clothing.
