Chapter Summaries
Chapter 1: Money and Mischief
Tom and Huck find a treasure. Huck, now wealthy, is taken in by the Widow Douglas, much to his displeasure. He prefers his old life of freedom. He and Tom form a gang of robbers, but their games soon lose their appeal. Huck befriends Jim. Pap reappears, demanding money, and Huck’s peaceful life is shattered.
Chapter 2: Escape from Pap
Huck endures abuse from his father. He escapes by faking his own death and flees to Jackson’s Island. There, he finds Jim, who has also run away. They find a dead man in a floating house.
Chapter 3: Rumors and Reunion
Huck disguises himself and learns that Jim is being pursued. They flee downriver, but are separated in a storm. Huck is taken in by a family, but is overjoyed to find Jim again.
Chapter 4: The Duke and The King
Huck and Jim rescue two con men, who claim to be royalty. The “duke” and “king” plan various scams. Huck becomes increasingly uneasy with their schemes.
Chapter 5: Tom’s Return and Jim’s Freedom
Huck is reunited with Tom Sawyer. They devise a plan to free Jim, even though Tom knows Jim is already free. Tom is shot during the escape. Jim’s freedom is finally revealed, and Huck learns that the dead man in the floating house was his father.
