Humor in Cinema: Mr. Bean and Charlie Chaplin
A. I often fly to Japan on business. It’s a long flight, and I rely on the films as a means of passing the time. The airlines screen quite a good range of films, so there is something for every taste. I usually find a couple of films that appeal to me. However, last time I flew, things went wrong. I’d already seen all the films except the Mr. Bean film. I dislike comedies. I have no doubt that many people enjoy them, but I don’t like watching people make fools of themselves. Since I had nothing better to do, I watched the Mr. Bean film. To my amazement, it was hilarious, and I laughed a lot. I think I’ll watch Mr. Bean next time the show is broadcast on TV!

E. Mr. Bean has a lot in common with Charlie Chaplin. Charlie Chaplin’s films were made in the days of silent films. They relied on actions to make them funny. The same may be said of Mr. Bean. Both men are proof that clever dialogue isn’t always needed to make a film amusing. Both Chaplin’s and Bean’s films can be enjoyed internationally because there is no language barrier.
