Jo’s Fight for Trousers & Woods’ Transformation in South Africa

Jo’s Fight for Equality

1) Her mother sided with her and launched a campaign against clothing discrimination. She fought for 3 years so that her daughter could have the right to wear what she wanted. In spite of their unhappiness, the school governors caved in to her claim. Girls now have the choice between the old rule and the way of the future. After all, what does it matter if you wear trousers or a skirt?

2) The EOC took up Jo’s case. It is unlawful to ask girls to give up wearing trousers. Boys can now turn up at school wearing skirts. Governors finally caved in to her sexual discrimination claim. After all that fuss, Jo was glad to get on with her schoolwork.

Donald Woods and Steve Biko: A Transformation

1) Ken Robertson has taken photographs from the police in Crossroads, a township in Cape Town. Donald Woods, the editor of the Daily Dispatch, decides to publish them. He also publishes an editorial attacking Steve Biko, the leader of the movement “Black Consciousness”. Mamphela Ramphele visits Woods to complain about his editorial about Biko and his political movement. She regrets that Woods writes without getting first-hand information, and invites him to visit Biko and talk to him in his township, in King William’s Town.

2) Woods drives to Biko’s township to meet him. After meeting his wife, he talks with him for a while. At first, their meeting is not very friendly, but the tone changes during the conversation. Woods realises that Biko is a warm, intelligent, sincere person. It’s the beginning of a relationship.

3) While visiting the hospital in Zanempilo, Woods and Biko talk about the situation of black people in South Africa, about the role to be played by them independently from white people. Biko explains the concept of inferiority that black people have to overcome. They have always been presented a world for white people, created and written by white people. Biko invites Woods to visit a black township and see how black people really live.

4) Woods wears a disguise to go to a township with Biko, who leaves someone sitting at his desk pretending it is him. This way they avoid Biko’s minders. He goes in a black taxi, with more black men. One of them is Mapetla, one of the workers at the Hospital.
