Nelson Mandela was born on July 18, 1918, in Mvezo, a village in South Africa. He had fourteen siblings and lived a simple life in his village. At five, he herded sheep and soon after became the first in his family to attend school. He moved to Johannesburg and began studying politics at the University of the Witwatersrand in 1943.

In 1944, he co-founded the African National Congress (ANC) Youth League with friends to combat the government’s discriminatory policies against Black people. During this time, racism and violence escalated in South Africa. Protests erupted, demanding Mandela’s release. In 1990, the South African government freed him, and he promptly re-entered politics, fighting against racism and violence.

Martin Luther King Jr. was born on January 15, 1929, in Atlanta, Georgia. He was the first son of Reverend Martin Luther King Sr., from whom he inherited his name. Until he was twelve, he lived with his extended family in a two-story Victorian house near his father’s and grandfather’s parish.

Martin Luther King Jr. dedicated his life to the nonviolent defense of civil rights. In 1955, he participated in a protest against racial segregation on public transport. In 1963, he launched a campaign for Black citizens’ voting rights, an end to racism, and improved education and housing. He was arrested multiple times during this campaign.

On August 28, 1963, 200,000 people gathered to hear his famous “I Have a Dream” speech against the pervasive racism in the United States.
