Understanding Hitboxes in Killer Instinct

Hitbox Types

Solid Red: Attack hitboxes that deal damage.

Hollow Green: Vulnerable to both strikes and projectiles.

Hollow Red: Vulnerable to strikes but immune to projectiles.

Solid Blue: Throw attempt hitboxes.

Hollow Blue: Vulnerable only to throws.

Solid Yellow: Collision boxes that prevent characters from passing through each other.

Solid Tan: Force block or proximity guard boxes that force opponents to block if they are holding back.

Solid Pink: Active attack hitboxes that cannot be traded with.

Light Green: Projectile hitboxes or projectile destroy boxes.

Hitbox Interactions

When an Attack hitbox touches a Vulnerable hitbox, a hit is registered.

If Attack hitboxes clash or both characters land hits simultaneously, the priority system determines the outcome.

Throws require a Throw hitbox to connect with a Throw Vulnerable hitbox.

Decoding Attack Data

Damage

Damage is calculated based on Damage Points. Each health bar has 360 Damage Points.

Example: Jago’s Standing HP deals 30.0 (200%) damage, which is 30/360 Damage Points or 8.33% damage. The 200% indicates damage scaling due to combo bonuses.

Combo Damage

Displays the total damage and potential damage (white health) of a combo.

Example: A Jago combo dealing 23% damage actually inflicts 85.7/360 Damage Points or 23.8% damage.

Attack Speed

Measured in frames, it includes Startup (time before the attack becomes active), Active (duration of the attack), and Recovery (time before another action can be performed).

Shadow Moves have two Startup values: before and after the “flash”.

Advantage

Indicates the frame advantage or disadvantage a character has after an attack. Positive values (+) mean you can act first, while negative values (-) mean your opponent can act first.

  • Invulnerable
  • Lower Body
  • Chain
  • Carry
  • Throw Invulnerable
  • Cross Up
  • Ground Bounce
