Libraries: Building Bridges for Interculturalism

In recent years we are witnessing a major change of
our societies to be a society where citizens
migrated to find a more prosperous life to be a society
is currently receiving a large amount of people
from very diverse backgrounds. This situation makes us live
So how about the other, a process of adaptation to new
situations, to know other realities, seek and find
new ways to help us, to each other, learn to
live with equal rights and duties, all this still
Utopia, but no longer has a purpose
desired.
One of the first utilities to discover the newcomer,
for sure, when it reaches the country, which became his
new home for a long time is, like the center of attention
ol’escola primary, the public library.

From this perspective, the public library he is
presenting a new challenge: to open up even more its
to show space with doors that will service
the entire population, but needed to make this possible
three elements:
knowledge and needs analysis
the different users of the community, the roads
that the library uses to connect with citizens and
the skills of librarians to design and equipment
run quality services.
In this issue of the Inquirer we open the doors
libraries active in this line, so know
activities, experiences and reflections result of labor
librarians and librarians who are working because
Libraries are places to build their own citizens.
You will also find materials on a selective guide
interculturalism, which we hope will be helpful.

The social right reading

The next ten years to 2006 will work in the libraries of Salt.
In this decade the human landscape of the village has changed in a way
important. Today, December 2005, we can speak of a thirty
percent of population coming from outside. As we have seen
from libraries? What can we say from our experience
about interculturalism?
Those who work in this space we talk about community reading
of their own experiences, our subjective viewpoints, but
this brief note of urgency does not. All we have lived it and
we are living differently. I just want to record
I thought of pursuing and that I need to share:
from the public library, when we talk about interculturalism
from concept to the social right to the reading public
everyone. And, as our human realities, speaking of this right
not only goes through good collections, buildings, furniture, services …
also happens to have enough staff and that it is prepared
to respond to new demands. If not, and
currently it is not, can not speak of equality law.
With the resources of local councils, in many cases less rich
country can not cope. Meanwhile, the Public Reading map, tool
pressure and compliance requirements, does not respond to demographics
current. There you can add external resources for projects
insufficient specific and can not be consolidated.
I think only from the Library Services of the Government of
Catalonia can outputs: should be able to listen realities
library of the territory and give concrete answers to the different
realities, without prejudice and see the public library as a space
location of immigration and social cohesion. The difficulties are not
cultural diversity (which I think are new possibilities) but
impoverishment of services to citizens.
