Character Analysis
Manelic
Hailing from Terra Alta, Manelic is an innocent, instinctual man unfamiliar with the world beyond his family and Tomàs. The lowlands, where he marries Marta, become a source of torment, pushing him back to his pure, simple origins. His feelings towards Marta and the lowlands transform throughout the story, culminating in an act of violence.
Marta
Marta, from humble beginnings, is marginalized by the community. Taken in by Sebastia, she becomes the object of his affection. Deceived by Sebastia’s scheme, her feelings for Manelic evolve from disgust to love, as she recognizes his innocence in contrast to Sebastia’s manipulative nature.
Sebastia
Driven by power and self-interest, Sebastia’s love for Marta leads him to deceive Manelic. His jealousy and desire to reclaim Marta’s dowry fuel the central conflict.
Tomàs
Tomàs, the hermit, acts as a mentor to Manelic, unaware of Sebastia’s deception. His wisdom and understanding offer guidance to those around him.
Nuri
Nuri, na Nuri’s sister, shares a close bond with Marta. Her innocence and kindness make her a target of mockery, yet she represents the only decent person in the village.
