Navigating Travel: Communication, Work Abroad, and Hotel Stays
Communication on the Move
Hello, is that Mr. Decker? It’s Karen from the hotel. Please call the events office; I’m returning your call. Okay, if we get cut off, get back to me on the landline as soon as you can. Now, how can I help you? What day did you want? Oh, I’m sorry, I just listed it for a moment. What day did you say? Yes, that is good for us. I mean, the conference is available.
Of course, I’ll send you a PDF of our events brochure. That will give you some idea of what we can offer. What’s your email address? I… I am… I’ll just read that back to you: s.austin.decker.KO@prl.ES. All right, I’ll email you the brochure right away. Oh, you’re breaking up.
Work Experience Abroad
I am going to France for six months. What about you? Croatia? I can’t wait! I’m really looking forward to all that swimming and sunbathing. You’ll be lucky if you have any time between shifts. Yeah, but on my day off, I can enjoy doing lots of other things. Remember to send me some photos. Can you speak Croatian? No, in the hotels, it’s mainly English, Italian, and a little German. I hope it will help me improve my English. I want to spend some time in Paris while I’m in France. The hotels promise to give us a few days off. I plan to do some shopping. I’d love to climb the Eiffel Tower. I got my flight tickets yesterday. Have you booked yours yet? Not yet. I’ve decided to fly direct to Dubrovnik, but I’m waiting for my work permit. I filled in the details and sent it off last month. They promised to send it back soon. I’ve got mine, but I want to travel through Europe after I finish working at the hotel. I need to look for some cheap places to stay. Oh, I managed to find some really good websites for hostels. Let’s go and check them out; we can print off anything interesting.
Airport Check-In
Can I have your ticket and your passport, please? Thank you. How many bags are you checking in? These two. Have you got any hand luggage? Yes, I’ve got my rucksack. You’ll have to check that in, I’m afraid; it’s too big for cabin luggage. Can you put it on the scales, please? Oh, I’ll just take my magazines out. Just tie the straps up so they don’t get caught in the conveyor belt. Right, did you pack your bags yourself? Yes. Have you left them unattended at any time? No. Would you like an aisle seat or a window seat? A window seat, please. Use your boarding card; the gate hasn’t been allocated. Check the departures board after you go through to the departure lounge. Thank you, have a good flight.
Airport Security
Could you put your magazines in this tray, please, and your jacket? Have you got any metal objects in your pocket? Money, jewelry? Yes, I’ve got some money, and what about my watch? Put them in the tray too, please. And have you got a mobile phone? Yes, put it in the tray as well, please. Thank you. Now, you can see through the detector. Could you come over here, please? Lift up your arms, please. Could you take off your shoes, please? Yes, of course. Thank you. I’ll put them through the scanner. Could you wait over there, please? Okay, can I take my jacket and money now? Yes, of course.
A Difficult Call
Good afternoon, Park Hotel, Luis speaking. I’m sorry, this is a very bad line. Could you repeat your name, please? Can you spell that, please? I am KRAUF, is that if the fox trot? No? Yes, that’s right. Mr. Krause, we have your reservation. Yes, Mr. Krause, your call was logged. Don’t worry, your rooms have been held. I said, don’t worry, your rooms have been held.
Oh, I am sorry, sorry that I didn’t quite catch that. Thanks for letting us know. That’s fine, the night porter will be here. Can you give me… Now, I’m sorry, you’re very faint. Could you speak up a bit? Did you say you’re at the airport now? Oh, right, yes, follow the signs to the city center for about another 20 km, then you pass along.
That’s a large park on your right. We’re just after the park on the left. Would you like me to reserve a parking space for you? No? A parking space for your car? Okay, I’ll do that now. You’ll be given a car park exit code when you arrive. Is there anything else I can help you with? No? Okay, I hope you have a safe journey.
