Plato’s Philosophy: Soul, Dialectics, Good, Justice
Alma (Soul)
ALMA (Soul): Top of life and knowledge, divine and immortal. Truth and happiness are reached through the soul, recalling ideas from the world of ideas via dialectics, not senses. Plato divides the soul into irascible (noble passions), concupiscible (passions), and rational (immortal, wisdom). The dominant part defines one’s societal role, leading to justice when all fulfill their roles.
Dialéctica (Dialectics)
Dialectics: Study of ideas and the path to true knowledge. It’s a purification process, reminiscence, moving through eikasía, pistis, dianoia, and dialectic. This involves studying gymnastics, music, astronomy, mathematics, and finally, ideas. Dialectic is dialogue, questioning, and answering with reason.
Bien (Good)
WELL (Good): Supreme idea, the sun illuminating everything in the intelligible world. It’s the principle of reality, intelligibility, and knowledge. Understanding the Good leads to just rulership, as knowing the Good means knowing truth and beauty. Evil stems from ignorance of the Good (Moral Intellectualism).
Virtud (Virtue)
UNDER (Virtue): Excellence in being, acting according to the Good. Justice is the ultimate virtue, resulting from harmony between the soul’s parts: wisdom (reason), fortitude (noble passions), and temperance (appetites). Each citizen embodies a virtue, leading to justice in the Republic.
Rey-filósofo (Philosopher King)
REY-philosopher (Philosopher King): Rules the ideal state, understanding the Idea of Good. Educated in gymnastics, music, mathematics, astronomy, and dialectics, they live communally, dedicated to the state’s good.
Mundo inteligible (Intelligible World)
WORLD intelligible (Intelligible World): True reality, reached by reason. Opposed to the sensible world, it contains eternal, essential ideas. The Myth of the Cave illustrates this: escaping the cave (sensible world) to the outside (intelligible world) through reason and education.
Justicia (Justice)
Justice: Ultimate aim of Plato’s philosophy. It’s harmony within the soul and society. Each part fulfills its function under reason’s rule, leading to happiness for all.
