Ramón del Valle-Inclán: A Literary Analysis

Valle-Inclán’s work is very broad and is usually classified into three levels:

Modernist Influence

This includes parts that are under the influence of the Modernista movement that dominated the aesthetics of his early years. In his first drama adaptation, one of the themes is female adultery, from a decline in terms of focusing primarily on the morbid. The author departs from the ideology of 19th-century theater. In 1908, he changed the title to Aparecen almas baratas and amplified characteristic quotations from his plays. Adapting the Marquis of Bradomín’s Autumn Sonata, this work presents elements of its next phase of multiple spaces and a chorus of Galician beggars. An aesthetic and antirealist attitude dominates.

Mythical Comedies

The savage comedies are located in Galicia and have as their protagonist a feudal lord, Juan Manuel de Montenegro, and his sons. The trilogy of heraldry includes Eagle (1907), Silver Face (1922), and Wolves’ Romance (1907). The protagonists belong to a family known for its cruelty. Galicia becomes a space where man lives dominated by their instincts and natural tendencies of brutal character. The Bewitched (1913) presents greed and sex as instruments of domination and leads to a tragic situation. The action is in Galicia, as in The Altarpiece of the Strokes of Lust and Death, which has grotesque features. The four works that comprise it are located in a rural Galicia. The last work is Divine Word, which is about a family’s fight for a subnormal child whose mother is a fairground attraction. The issue is resolved at the end by adultery, with divine scenes of enormous difficulty for representation.

Farce

Farce begins with The Child’s Head of Dragon (1909), in which the grounds of a children’s story of the characters in the world from Cervantes makes a critique of power and institutions. The Marchioness Rosalinda (1912) transpires in a modern garden with characters from the aristocracy and others taken from the commedia dell’arte. It is the first of the sentences written in verse. The author pays homage to Modernism and reveals the deception of a world aesthetic and sentimental.

The grotesque face of The Love of Rey (1920) cycle ends with farce and licensed by the Queen in verse. It also offers a Castiza grotesque vision of the kingdom of Isabel II, very near and to the world of absurdity.

Grotesque

It can be considered a genre in the play. In these parts, the natural world is left behind and replaced with the city of Madrid, located in the present time. Valle-Inclán said that there were three ways of viewing the world: on its knees, standing, or in the air. On his knees is the character as hero of Homer; standing is the position of the feet, as seen in Brother and Shakespeare; and in the air makes the character lower notes with ironic attitude become gods. The present characters of farce is considered that Spanish attitude is found in works of Cervantes, Quevedo, or even Goya. Valle-Inclán is the stance adopted in the nonsensical. To the critics, there is a relationship between the large and expressionism scarecrows came in many or European art of the century. In both cases, this warped reality is related to the grotesque with the technique in his theater. According to Debrecha, Valle-Inclán distorting the aesthetics could well reflect the reality of Spain’s moment. Life was tragic and absurd, and that is the image showing the concave mirrors of the alley cat that appears in the nonsensical is a caricature of Spain for so to coincide with his own being.
