Acquaintance: A person whom one knows casually.

Anniversary: The date of an important past event that is celebrated.

Community: A locality inhabited by people.

Couple: Two persons, such as a married pair or dance partners.

Destiny: The events that will happen to a person or thing in the future.

Engagement: A formal agreement to get married.

Flatmate: A person who shares a flat with others.

Generation Household: All the people of about the same age within a society or a particular family.

Loyalty: The quality of being loyal or faithful.

Neighbor: Someone who lives near you.

Nephew: A son of your sister or brother.

Partner: The person you are married to.

Relative: A member of your family.

Roots: Family origins.

Fall in love: To develop a passionate affection for another person, especially when based on sexual attraction.

Fall out: To disagree with someone.

Get in touch: Establish communication with someone.

Get on well: Have a friendly relationship.

Get to know: Become acquainted with a person; learn about a topic.

Go out with: Do some activity with someone, often for a romantic purpose.

Inherit: Receive something that is left to one after the death of someone.

Keep in touch: Maintain communication with another person.

Lose touch: Cease to be in communication with someone.

Make up with: Reconcile with someone after an argument or disagreement.

Propose to: To ask someone to marry you.

Support: Help someone to achieve something.

Travel and Tourism

Campsite: An area on which holiday-makers may pitch a tent.

Holiday: A day of relaxation from work.

Time-share apartment: Apartment where you stay on holiday.

Sunbathe: To expose one’s body deliberately to the direct rays of the sun.

Go sightseeing: Act of visiting and seeing places and objects of interest.

Hike: A long walk or march for pleasure, exercise, or military training.

Tour: A long journey including the visiting of a number of places.

Go on an excursion: A short trip.

Go mountaineering: The sport of climbing mountains.

Go canoeing: Travel in a kayak through a river.

Go sailing: The act of a ship leaving a port.

Go fishing: The technique, occupation, or sport of catching fish.

Go cycling: To ride a bicycle.

Go camping: To stay outdoors, typically in a tent.

Sleep in a tent: The act of sleeping in a movable shelter of cloth.

Single/double room: A room in a hotel; a double room is for two persons.

Check in: To record one’s arrival, as at a hotel or for work.

Check out: To pay the bill and depart, especially from a hotel.

Check-in desk: The place where you register your arrival, typically at an airport or hotel.

Public Transport

Fare: Price of traveling in public transport.

Platform: The raised area along the tracks of a railroad station.

Crew: People who operate a ship, aircraft, or spacecraft.

Cab: Taxi.

Bus stop: A place where the bus stops and people get on or off.

Driver: A person who drives a vehicle.

Rush hour: A time of day in which large numbers of people are in transit.

Tube: The tunnel in which a metro runs.

Destination: The place to which a person or thing travels or is sent.

Inspector: An officer appointed to inspect.

Subway: Underground electric railroad, usually in a large city.

Lift: (British English) Elevator.

Metro: An underground railway system.

Coach: A long-distance bus.

Escalator: A continuously moving stairway on an endless loop.

Check: Leave baggage to be sent on.

Rack: Place to transport luggage.

Carriage: Wheeled vehicle for carrying persons, usually pulled by horses.

Compartment: Private room, usually in a train.

Season ticket: A ticket that allows travel within a certain area for a specific period, often at a discounted rate.

Single ticket: A ticket for a one-way journey.

Return ticket: A ticket for a round-trip journey.

Bus driver: A person whose job is to drive a bus.

Bus: A large, long motor vehicle equipped with seating for passengers.

Conductor: A person who collects fares and sells tickets on a bus.

Guard: A soldier or other person assigned to protect a person.

Commuter: A person who travels some distance to work on a regular basis.

School and Education

Admission: The act of allowing entry.

Deadline: The time by which something must be finished or submitted.

Compulsory: Something that must be done; required.

Practical: Relating to actual experience or the use of knowledge in activities, rather than just theory.

State-run school: A school funded and controlled by the government.

Stimulating: Encouraging new ideas or learning.

Streamed: Grouped by ability level.

Retake an exam: To take an exam again.
