Rights, Responsibilities, and Technology: Life Insights
Becoming 18: Rights and Responsibilities
Becoming 18 is a significant turning point. As an 18-year-old, you gain more rights but also take on more responsibilities. Understanding these can help you face the future with confidence and enjoy life without trouble.
Rights and Responsibilities
- Work: You can work without special rules or parental permission.
- Property: You can rent an apartment and buy property (but not rent a car).
- Driving: You can get an unrestricted driver’s license.
- Financial: You are responsible for your bills and obligations.
You can legally smoke (though it’s unhealthy). Giving tobacco to a minor is illegal. Drug consequences may be more severe than when you were a juvenile. School rules may also apply.
You can vote and serve on a jury (if a US citizen and understand English). Male citizens must register for the Selective Service.
Technology and Free Time
Some say technology reduces free time, but I disagree. People have more free time now compared to years ago.
Technology simplifies life. For example, housework is easier, and you can multitask. Food processors help in the kitchen. Online ticket purchases and banking are also convenient.
In conclusion, we aren’t fully utilizing technology’s potential, and we blame technology for this.
New technology has changed how we live, communicate, and enjoy ourselves. The internet and smartphones make life easier. If this were entirely true, we would have more free time. However, we are busier than before. So, have new technologies improved our life?
Technology allows us to do things quicker. For example, sending an email is faster than sending a letter by traditional mail.
However, we do more things than we used to, because life is more complex. Leisure time is more expensive. We have more technological goods at home, and we like traveling, which is expensive.
In conclusion, technology could create more free time, but spare time is not always cheap. To get it, we might have to change how we enjoy ourselves and give up some things we like.
Complaint Letter
My name is Juan Miguel. I’d like to complain about the poor service from the online DVD store after I joined on February 25, 2015.
Since joining, I’ve received excessive spam, making my email unusable. This causes problems at work.
I request that you remove my email from your list to stop the spam. The store is not protecting contact details.
Please confirm these steps. You can reach me at the phone number I provided when I joined.
Thank you for your prompt attention.
I am writing to express my dissatisfaction with the food and drinks at the ‘European Restaurant’ on January 18th this year.
Firstly, I had difficulty registering for the event. The online registration was unworkable.

Solution
I’m afraid that if these conditions are not met, we may be forced to take legal action.
I look forward to receiving your explanation of these matters.
Volunteer Experience
Two years ago, I started volunteering at Ampros, an association helping people with intellectual disabilities. I went once a week.
Near the train station in Santander, this association has activities where you can help people. These include teaching cooking (simple recipes), crafts, theater, and ballroom dancing.
They share stories about their day, family, friends, or pets.
One memorable day was a Christmas party where they showcased their activities.
I think that we had prejudices about them.
My Favorite Film Moment
I loved a moment in Fast and Furious 7. The film focuses on street racing and heists, starring Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, and others.
Paul Walker died in 2013. His brothers, Cody and Caleb, acted in the film to double Paul.
At the end, Paul’s friends made a tribute video using the song “See You Again.”
In conclusion, it’s a good way to show the best moments and remember the actor.
