Sexually Transmitted Diseases: Symptoms, Causes, and Prevention

Sexually Transmitted Diseases

Syphilis

Syphilis is a chronic infectious disease primarily spread through sexual contact. It is caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum. Transmission occurs through contact with sores, cankers, or syphilitic lesions.

AIDS (HIV)

AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome) is a condition caused by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). A person is diagnosed with AIDS when their immune system is severely compromised by HIV, making them susceptible to opportunistic infections. This infection is considered irreversible.

Gonorrhea

Gonorrhea, also known as gonococcal urethritis, is a sexually transmitted infection caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae (gonococcus).

Human Papilloma Virus (HPV)

The Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) is a diverse group of DNA viruses that infect the skin and mucous membranes. There are over 100 different HPV types. Some types cause warts, while others result in subclinical infections and precancerous lesions. All HPVs are transmitted through skin-to-skin contact.

Genital Herpes

Genital herpes (Herpes Simplex Virus 2) can affect anyone who is sexually active. Many people are unaware they have genital herpes due to mild or absent symptoms, which can vary significantly.

Hepatitis

Hepatitis is an inflammatory condition affecting the liver. It can be caused by infectious agents (viral, bacterial), immunological factors (auto-antibodies), or toxins (alcohol, poisons, drugs). Depending on the cause, it can also be considered a sexually transmitted disease.

Vaginitis

Vaginitis is defined as inflammation of the vaginal mucosa, often accompanied by increased vaginal discharge. It is primarily caused by an imbalance in the normal vaginal flora, which regulates vaginal pH and the presence of microorganisms. Common symptoms include increased vaginal discharge (leukorrhea) and genital itching (pruritus). Vaginitis is a common problem that can lead to vulvovaginitis.

Trichomoniasis

Trichomoniasis is a sexually transmitted disease caused by the protozoan parasite Trichomonas vaginalis, infecting the urogenital tract.

Vulvovaginitis

Vulvovaginitis is a common condition that can affect women of any age. It can be caused by bacteria, yeasts, viruses, parasites, sexually transmitted diseases, chemicals in bubble baths, soaps, perfumes, poor hygiene, and allergens.

Chlamydia

Chlamydia infection is caused by the organism Chlamydia trachomatis and is the most common sexually transmitted disease. Sexually active individuals and those with multiple partners are at the highest risk.
