Study Abroad Prep: Essential Skills & Tips
Introduction
This proposal aims to offer insights into the potential obstacles students might face when taking courses at universities abroad. Furthermore, it provides suggestions regarding the content of the course offered by the UCLM, equipping students with the necessary tools to overcome potential hurdles.
Potential Drawbacks for Students Studying Abroad
A survey was conducted among UCLM students planning to study abroad in the upcoming semester. Over half of the participants admitted to being unsure of reliable sources for finding student accommodation. A smaller percentage indicated they would benefit from an introductory language course offered by the university. Most students also stated that they would find guidance helpful when choosing between Erasmus destinations.
Solutions to Address These Issues
To address the aforementioned problems, the following suggestions should be incorporated into the course:
- Teach students how to recognize common scams related to student accommodation rentals.
- Provide a lesson on the most reliable sources for finding and renting a flat or student residence hall.
- Implement introductory foreign language classes, enabling students to obtain an A2 level before arriving at their chosen destination.
- Invite students with prior Erasmus exchange experience to join the course as volunteers, offering firsthand advice.
Conclusion
By considering the suggestions presented in this proposal, the course will effectively address the challenges students might encounter when studying in a foreign country.
Improving Education Quality at UCLM
Introduction
This proposal provides an overview of the primary concerns UCLM students have regarding their university experience. Data was gathered through a survey among students of the English Studies degree, and a set of recommendations will be presented to improve the current situation.
Student Concerns
Interviews were conducted with English Studies students, where they expressed concerns about various aspects of the university’s organization. Over half of those interviewed stated that timetables were frequently changed without prior notice, leading to confusion. A significant number of exchange students found the university’s website inefficient for finding practical information such as schedules, calendars, and academic activities. Finally, students reported that the Moodle platform often crashed, and they lacked a backup platform.
Suggestions for Improvement
Considering the interview results, these suggestions should be taken into account to resolve the issues:
- Publish any sudden timetable changes on the main website of the Faculty of Arts.
- Create a directory with representatives’ email addresses for communicating significant schedule changes.
- Implement better user experience practices in the design of the institutional website.
- Display practical information, such as updated calendars, schedules, and activities, on the web pages of the Faculties and Departments.
