Understanding Mass Media
Today, people want to be informed, and mass media are the usual channels. The most important are radio, television, press, and the internet.
Communication Journalism
The avalanche of information requires that people be trained to value their own criteria and to avoid manipulation. The characters in this communication are:
- The issuer: can be an individual, columnist, reporter, etc.
- The message: the content of news reporting is varied; the requirement must be “present.” Selection, genre, channel.
- Receiver: the general public.
News Genres
The aim is to inform objectively, shape opinion, and to educate and entertain. Genres are journalistic channels used as a means of social communication. Information and opinion are classified as follows:
- Information: presents the information in an objective manner.
- Opinion: generally adopts a subjective attitude in news and chronicles.
The News
Current events are set objectively, accounting for events from highest to lowest interest. A brief report on facts reveals the background.
The Chronicle
Reports and guidance played by the recorder. Narrative, expository, information, and guides to events of the chronicler.
Structure and Style
Two main parts:
- The news entry answers the key questions: who, what, when, where, why.
- The body develops the entrance. Style: clarity, conciseness, and correctness.
Feature
Like the story but with more depth and details.

- The body does not follow the inverted pyramid model.
Style: respect brevity, clarity, and accuracy. Supports a greater freedom of expression, taking into account:
- Presentation must be objective.
- Straightforward style dating.
- Hidden vocabulary.
Types of Stories
- News reports: provides objective information about the topic of social significance.
- Interpretive report: interested in the explanation but not the journalist who follows the story to exposure.
Interview
Ask questions of a character to find information. There are 3 types:
- Statements: questions, short answer develops the character.
- Personality interviews: ask questions to know the nature of the character.
- Interviews with established formulas: issuer has prepared questions and receiving the response.
Article and Editorial
Subjective views are texts which predominate on the information.
Editorial
The newspaper’s opinion on a topical issue. The main style information is journalistic objectivity, conciseness, and clarity, avoiding the use of self. Exposure: gives a review of these data for reference to political principles, economic, social … welcome to society. Correct conclusion and applicable to the case in which the prosecution, i.e., the ruling.

A qualified person to give a general opinion on a topical issue; the structure has more freedom.
