Veeam Backup & Replication: Key Concepts and Configurations

Veeam Backup & Replication: Key Concepts

Backup Job Configuration:

  • A Backup Administrator configures a copy job. Options include: One backup file per VM, or one backup file for all backup jobs.
  • A Backup Administrator has restored a VM. The recovery process should be: Migrate to production.
  • If a backup job is started while another is running, the backup job will fail immediately.
  • The most appropriate setting for backup jobs is to run continuously.
  • A Backup Administrator must perform a level of recovery. Options include: Backup SQL and enable application processing.
  • A Backup Administrator needs to create a fully functional VM copy. They should use a VM Copy Job or a SureBackup Job.
  • To create an offsite backup configuration, mount the NFS Backup Repository.
  • For an optimal offsite backup job configuration, use at least two backup repositories at the remote site.
  • A scale-out backup repository full backup can be: Always the same as the previous full backup or an extent determined by free space.

VM and Network Operations:

  • To minimize network utilization when restoring a VM, restore it up-front from a backup and then perform a failback.
  • After a successful replica failover, you should use the “Undo Failover” option.
  • After selecting Incremental backups, disable synthetic full backups and active full backups.
  • After a Failover, the following options are available: Failback, Permanent Failover, and Undo failover.
  • After selecting Incremental backups, disable synthetic full backups and active full backups.

Virtual Labs and Recovery:

  • Universal Application-Item Recovery requires a virtual lab with vPower NFS configured.
  • Undoing a failover returns the VM to its original state.
  • Failover Plans allow for undoing failovers and grouping VMs.
  • Veeam Replication allows restoring to different locations and can restore multiple VMs at once.
  • Cloud Connect tenants can perform virtual machine operations, replication, and backup operations.
  • The Planned Failover feature shuts down the production VM.
  • Veeam Backup & Replication supports VMware vSphere Hypervisor.
  • During SureBackup verification, logs are removed from the datastore in Lab settings.
  • During SureBackup job execution, the job is located on the backup repository and the datastore in Lab settings.

Performance and Optimization:

  • Extreme compression produces the smallest backup file but may reduce backup performance.
  • Backup job performance issues can be avoided by adjusting the compression settings.
  • Veeam plug-ins/add-ons can be installed from Kaseya and LabTech.

  • If a VM is restored to its original location, the original VM will be deleted.
  • If the compression level is changed, backup files will remain the same.
  • Deduplication settings are applied only when a new active full backup is created.
  • If the network is disconnected, the “Resume on Network Disconnect” feature applies to all replication jobs.
  • If a virtual machine does not boot in a SureBackup job, it is stopped when the maximum allowed boot time is reached.
  • In Veeam Backup & Replication, the repository is stored on the drive of the Veeam server at the moment of installation.
  • To delete a backup, ensure that no jobs are targeting it.
  • In Veeam Backup & Replication, encryption is used for backup jobs, tapes in media pools, and backup copy jobs.
  • It is possible to create a manual full backup using the menu of a corresponding job.
  • Parallel processing is a global setting and cannot be disabled.
  • It is possible to switch between backup methods on the backup repository.
  • To throttle I/O tasks, use the options to throttle I/O tasks or stop a datastore.
  • Veeam ONE monitors backups the same way after deployment.
  • Since the last remote replica, one or three restore points can be created from a backup job.
