Wonder Novel: Discussion Questions and Answers
Wonder: Discussion Questions and Answers
1. North Pole: How is Auggie like the North Pole?
Auggie uses this comparison to explain that all eyes at the science fair would be on him. Like compass needles pointing north, people would stare because they are not used to his appearance.
2. The Auggie Doll (p. 208): What “ridiculous rumor” started a change in the war? Was the rumor so ridiculous? Why (not)? How did Auggie again use humor to gain friends?
The rumor spread by Julian was that Jack had hired a “hit man” to “get” him, Miles, and Henry. It wasn’t so ridiculous because Justin had actually threatened them after Jack told him what was happening. However, people didn’t know this, so it sounded pathetic, and people started laughing about Julian behind his back.
Auggie makes jokes about his own appearance.
3. Lobot (p. 211): With all of Auggie’s facial abnormalities, does it surprise you that the hearing aids bother him so much? Why do you think this is?
Auggie says that out of all his features, he hates his ears the most. He also says he’ll look like Lobot (a Star Wars character) if he wears the earbuds with the headband. Maybe it bothers him so much because wearing hearing aids adds yet another particularity to his appearance.
4. Hearing Brightly (p. 214): How did the kids at school react to Auggie’s hearing aids?
Auggie thought they would make a big deal about it, but they didn’t. Summer was glad he could hear better, and Jack said it made him look like an FBI agent, but that was it.
5. Via’s Secret (p. 216): What do you think Auggie’s mom’s answer was to Via’s comment?
Probably she didn’t answer anything after Via told her that she had been ignoring her all her life and had chosen high school to start showing interest.
6. My Cave (p. 217): What do you think Via will say to Auggie since we know he figured out the truth about the play?
That she feels and loves him very much and that she wants Auggie to go to the play.
7. Goodbye (p. 220): “Auggie and Via hugged very, very tight and cried a million tears.” Do you think they’ll be able to handle what happens? Explain.
Yes, they will. They love Daisy a lot, and they don’t want her to die, but she doesn’t want to suffer either, so they understand that it’s time to say goodbye.
8. Daisy’s Toys (p. 223): Why do you think Auggie’s parents didn’t tell Auggie that Daisy was sick? Why do you think Auggie didn’t go to his dad when he found him crying?
Because they wanted to protect him. He was going through a tough time with the hearing aids, and they didn’t want Auggie to suffer more.
He was going to, but then he thought maybe his dad was whisper-crying because he didn’t want anyone to hear him, so he walked out and went to Via’s room and saw Mom lying next to Via on the bed, so he went to his bed.
9. Heaven (p. 226): Daisy was the one and only soul who never ever saw a flaw in Auggie’s face. How do you think Auggie will be able to cope with her being gone?
It will be difficult for him, but he thinks that she is in heaven with her grandmother, and there everything is love, and nobody forgets their loved ones.
10. Understudy (p. 228): Why do you think Via changed her mind about having Auggie come to the play?
Probably because she loves Auggie, and she thought that was more important than what people thought when they saw him. It could also be because Auggie was having a hard time after Daisy’s death, and she wanted him to be happy.
